The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced that it will require all new vehicles to come equipped with side curtain airbags by 2013. The new standard is expected to save 311 lives per year and prevent approximately 361 serious injuries. NHTSA estimates that the new rule will raise vehicle cost by approximately $33 and would lower fatalities as a result of a side impacts which account for 28 percent of all crash related fatalities.
