NHTSA has opened a preliminary evaluation for certain 2005 and 2006 year model BMWs following reports that the front passenger airbag sensor may malfunction. The sensor determines if the front passenger seat is occupied or vacant and activates the passenger airbag accordingly. In reports submitted to NHTSA, customers stated that the sensor malfunctioned and did not activate the airbag when a passenger was occupying the seat. In the event of an accident, the front seat passenger could be seriously injured or killed if the airbag fails to deploy.
